At the same time as the annual publication of statistics from the sector carried out in collaboration with the FAO statistics department, the "Economic Analysis and Outlook" experts group of the Organisation based on questionnaires filled out by the OIV member states, gathers available information of the sector  from the European Commission, professional organisations and from the press and taking into consideration initial forecasts made by certain national statistics services, publishes an initial forecast in October, called "State of conditions report" of the level of viniculture production of the year (production in the wine cellars since March-April in the southern hemisphere and during the grape harvest in the northern hemisphere).

This initial evaluation is completed in March of the following year (in a document called " State of the Vitiviniculture World Market"), following conditions reports of different countries from the experts in the group, based on an initial evaluation of world vineyard surface area, wine consumption and trade.The level of world wine production, which is evaluated in October of the previous year is thus ajusted at this time.
