OIV Standard for International Wine and Spirituous Beverages of vitivinicultural Origin Competitions
The General Assembly of the OIV,  on 3rd July 2009, decided to replace the OIV international wine competition standard, adopted in 1994, and the international spirituous beverage of vitivinicultural origin competition standard, adopted in 1999, with the OIV STANDARD FOR INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITIONS AND SPIRITUOUS BEVERAGES OF VITIVINICULTURAL ORIGIN (OIV-CONCOURS 332A-2009) and adopted and requested the General Secretariat to implement the GUIDELINES FOR GRANTING OIV PATRONAGE OF INTERNATIONAL WINE AND SPIRITUOUS BEVERAGES OF VITIVINICULTURAL ORIGIN COMPETITIONS (OIV-CONCOURS 332B-2009).
The Member states of the OIV unanimously adopted these two texts; one sets the criteria for granting OIV patronage and the other sets the technical rules for the organisation of competitions which seek this patronage.
The objective of this reform is to adapt the OIV standard with noted evolutions and to validate a single tasting score sheet drawn up jointly by the OIV and the International Union of Oenologists. Moreover, important work has been carried out in view of defining descriptors used on the score sheet in order to provide international tasters with standardised criteria. Finally, this new standard makes a distinction between general type competitions, that being competitions open to all types of wine and spirituous beverages of vitiviniculture origin and category type competitions which may be limited to a vine variety or a type of beverage.
